Painted it for my dear friend Rodney’s newborn baby! Hopefully as she grows up, this painting will remind her to keep on dreaming as she travels through her rainbow path of life!

ARTS & CRAFTS// Freefall pt 2
As you can see from my previous post, this is the other set I made for my living room. I’m VERY pleased with my super chill parachutin’ turtle. I’m a lover of all things DIY, so I’ve been making/decorating my living room by myself- art and all. My sofa has already been upholstered and the wall art is almost done. I’m still looking for a perfect hexagonal mirror on the cheap. I plan to sunburst the crap out of it and make it my centerpiece! I’ll def show pics once the room is done- soon!

I always grab Starbucks over the weekend with my best friend A. One of the conversations I had with him last month was what to paint for his new apartment. He has this GIANT two-story wall and he kept hinting at a Rothko-esque style painting he wanted. As I was thinking about how daunting a task it would be to paint something for a 15 meter high wall, I started day dreaming about what I wanted to paint for myself. I don’t know why, but I was itching to paint something involving a parachute, and A added to that idea that it should be with turtles. So here it is! Part 1 of 2- ”Freefall.”

I started out with a few blobs here and there. Working with acrylic, it’s kind of hard to sketch anything once the paint is on (it has this plasticky shiny finish, and it’s sticky when it’s wet), so I used solid blobs to sort of map out the scale of the painting. This part actually took a few days because I couldn’t seem to get it right.

But once I got it figured out, the rest was fast. Drawing straight and even lines with similar thickness was pretty difficult. Especially since I didn’t have anything on hand to alter the viscosity of my paint.

Finished!

My little living room is getting closer and closer to completion! Yay!
ARTS & CRAFTS// A Flock of Cranes.
Every once in a while I like to paint neutral pieces to decorate my house. I mean, why buy a print when I can paint it myself? My living room was painted with sea foam stripes last year, and aside from various pieces of matching furniture, the room lacked a unifying secondary color. I decided that the complementary color to these stripes were going to be an ocher or a mustard yellow, so I set about planning a painting for the blank space between the boudoir and the TV.
What I decided to do was paint miniature flowers all over a large sheet of cardboard- kind of like a wall paper. I started painting from the right hand corner in a custom mixed yellow, and a few hours later, realized that the yellow flowers seemed 1) kind of girly and 2) a bit boring. So I changed it up and made it into a sort of gradient starting with yellow flowers and ending with brick colored flowers at the bottom.
I wanted a flock of birds flying over the flowers in a silhouette but as I started thinking about this concept, my mind started shifting toward a more creative approach: what if the flock of birds were origami cranes?
By day three, my painting finally came to fruition- those flowers took over 12 hours to paint, and I am so glad I am done.

UPDATED: It’s on my wall now- I’m still not sure what to do with that gap of space under the painting where the chair is. All my TV cables dangle out of that outlet so I have to find a chic way to cover it to keep the room nice looking.
